Description

Crater SCHILLER :

Dimensions : 179 X 71 Km Km ;

Depth : 3.9 km;

Selenográficas Coordinates : LAT : 51 ° 48 ' 00 " S , LON : 40 ° 00 ' 00 " W ;

Period Geologic Lunar : Nectárico ( Nectarian ) , 3920 million to 3850 million years ago .

Best time to observe : 3 days after the " crescent " or 2 days after the "Fourth Quarter " phase.

Schiller ( S ) is a very unusual elongated crater , located near the southwest edge of the Moon , and vastly elevated region occupied by impact craters . The elongated shape of Schiller , which resembles an ellipse , is even more pronounced by the proximity to the limb of the Moon

At first glance , Schiller appears to consist of two overlapping craters . However , the delineation of its outer walls suggests that there may be three or four . The long axis of this " ellipse " presents the northwest - southeast, with greatest width at half southeast. The inner wall Schiller is presented in the form of steps or contours ( terraced ) . Most of your floor is flat due to flooding by lava .

Inside the crater, which is 3.9 km deep, the northwest side , there are two mountains in linear sequence , forming a large ridge that divides the floor into two halves .

Along the eastern edge of Schiller positions to Bayer impact crater (diameter : 49 Km , LAT : 51.6 ° S LON : 35.0 ° W ) . Bayer ( B ) is a circular formation , with high , sloping inner walls , with the bottom floor flooded by lava that hosts a small crater ( Bayer L , diameter : 7 Km ) .
